Asturias, the Natural Paradise of Spain

“Asturias my beloved homeland, Asturias my love, I wish I could be in Asturias for each of the occasions…” this is the introduction to the anthem of my Asturian land, a small region of northwest Spain which is nowadays known as the Natural Paradise of Spain.

One hour after having left Madrid behind, flying towards the north and above the dry lands of Spain covered in yellows and browns, we start flying above the enormous Cantabric range: A mass of sharp mountains that in the month of June still lay under a blanket of white snow.

My heart starts to beat strongly knowing that I am minutes away from landing in my homeland. Just five minutes after leaving behind the mountains of the Range, we find before us the unending mosaic of greens that characterizes Asturias… I have not yet stepped on this land and it seems to me that the freshness of this region is invading my senses. From the plane window I am able to appreciate the minute villages sprinkled throughout the narrow valleys surrounded by farmlands of a thousand tones of green. A few more minutes and the coastline decorated with clean, pronounced cliffs and waves topped with white ocean foam, contrasts with the intense blue of the sea in which I will find myself swimming in just a few days. Just a few meters from the coastline the stylized groups of eucalyptus trees stand straight like sentinels of the sea. Further on towards the interior, the thick woods of beech and chestnut trees seem to cover this land with a thick and refreshing blanket that protects it from the Spanish sun. No matter where I look, green is all I see.

Asturias is a natural paradise for the tourist that is searching to hide from the intense sun and dryness that characterizes much of the rest of Spain. It is to me, however, the paradise where I was born, where I was raised, and where luckily I return every summer to enjoy once more all of the treasures that this land has to offer.

“Asturias patria querida, Asturias de mis amores, quién estuviera en Asturias en todas las ocasiones...”_ así empieza el himno de mi tierra asturiana, una pequeña región del noroeste de España a la cual hoy se refiere como El Paraíso Natural de España.

Tras una hora de haber dejado Madrid atrás, volando hacia el norte, sobre las secas tierras de España, cubiertas de tonos amarillos y marrones, comenzamos a sobrevolar la inmensa cordillera Cantábrica, un macizo de montañas agrestes que aun en el mes de junio mantienen las blancas nieves invernales.

Mi corazón comienza a latir fuertemente sabiendo que estoy a minutos de un aterrizaje en mi tierra natal. La Cordillera queda atrás en cuestión de unos cinco minutos y aparece ya el mosaico interminable de verdes que caracteriza Asturias... aun no he pisado esta tierra y parece que el frescor de la misma embriague ya mis sentidos. Desde la ventanilla del avión puedo apreciar las diminutas aldeas que salpican los innumerables valles angostos, rodeados de los diferentes cultivos de mil tonalidades verdes.Unos minutos más y la costa sembrada de acantilados limpios, pronunciados y adornados con la blanca espuma del mar, contrasta con el intenso azul del océano en el que en unos días nadaré. A escasos metros de la costa los estilizados bosques de eucaliptos se encuentran herguidos como centinelas del mar. Y más allá, hacia el interior, los espesos bosques de hayas y castaños parecen cubrir esta tierra de un manto espeso y fresco que la proteje del sol español. Para donde quiera que mire, verde y más verde es todo lo que puedo ver.

Asturias es un paraíso natural que ofrece a cualquier visitante el frescor y la inmensidad natural que abunda en cualquier rincón de la misma. Es un lienzo de montañas, valles, costas limpias y agrestes, vegetación y abundante agua, en el extremo norte de España. Es un lugar paradisíaco para el turista que busca escapar del intenso sol y de la sequedad de la otra España. Pero para mi es el paraíso que me vio nacer, crecer y que afortunadamente, me sigue viendo llegar cada verano para disfrutar una vez más de todos los tesoros y la riqueza que esta tierra tiene que ofrecer.
