Ride the Bus in Mexico
Leave your car at home and don’t rent one when you get there. When in Mexico, take the bus. It’s cheap, comfortable and relaxing. In Mexico, buses arrive and leave on time, are frequent, and they go anywhere there is a passable road. There are four basic levels of service: luxury-class, plus-class, first-class and second-class. The kind of bus you take will depend upon your destination and the abundance or scarcity of pesos in your pocketbook.
Luxury-class buses run between the larger cities and make few, if any stops. An action film usually plays on an overhead television and the cabin is air conditioned. Equipped with a toilet and excellent comfortable seating, luxury buses are perfect for overnight travel between cities.
A plus-class bus is one step down from luxury class. They offer service to a wider variety of towns, and stop a bit more frequently. They provide the same amenities as luxury-class, but at a slightly lower level, and cost only two-thirds as much.
The next level is first-class. In first class, the intent is to offer all the amenities of plus-class, but at times the air conditioning might not work properly, or perhaps that once comfortable seat has fatigued cushioning. The first-class bus will probably take the secondary road instead of the toll road, which translates into a longer ride.
Second-class buses offer service between smaller towns. Amenities are few, but fares are cheap, and the trip is always interesting. You might be able to buy homemade tamales from a vendor or hear a surprisingly good singer of regional folk music serenade the passengers for a small donation. The bus may stop with maddening frequency, and there could be an unscheduled stop to refill the radiator. You will be the only gringo, which is perfect for practicing your Spanish with the friendly locals.
The best way to plan your bus trip is to simply have a general idea of where you want to go and when. Further planning may be fruitless and frustrating. Just go to the station a day before – or even the day of your trip, and scan the schedule board. Purchase a ticket for your departure of choice, hop aboard and enjoy the ride. It’s safe, the people are nice, and the scenery is beautiful. And back home, your car is sleeping peacefully under two feet of fresh snow.

Deja tu auto en casa y no alquiles uno cuando llegues a México. Allí, viaja en autobús, que los mexicanos llaman también “camión”. Es barato, cómodo y relajante. Los autobuses en México llegan y salen a tiempo, pasan con frecuencia, y van a donde quiera que haya caminos transitables. Hay cuatro niveles básicos de servicio: de lujo, clase “plus”, primera clase y segunda clase. El tipo de autobús que tomes dependerá de tu destino y de la abundancia o escasez de pesos en tu bolsillo.
Los autobuses de lujo viajan entre las ciudades más grandes y hacen pocas paradas o ninguna. Generalmente muestran películas de acción en un televisor colocado en alto, y la cabina tiene aire acondicionado. Equipados con baño y asientos cómodos, los autobuses de lujo son perfectos para viajar de noche entre ciudades.
El próximo nivel es primera clase. La intención de primera clase es ofrecer los servicios de la clase “plus”, pero a veces el aire acondicionado podría no funcionar bien, o quizás los cojines de los asientos ya no sean tan cómodos. El autobús de primera clase probablemente tome una carretera secundaria en lugar de una de peaje, lo que significa un viaje más largo.
Los autobuses de segunda clase ofrecen servicio entre pueblos más pequeños. Los servicios son pocos, pero los pasajes son baratos y el viaje es siempre interesante. A veces podrás comprarle tamales caseros a una vendedora, o escuchar la serenata de un buen cantante de música folklórica regional a cambio de un pequeño donativo. El autobús podría detenerse con demasiada frecuencia, y podría haber paradas no programadas para llenar el radiador. Tú serás el único gringo, lo que es perfecto para practicar tu español con los amistosos mexicanos.
La mejor manera de planear tu viaje en autobús es comenzar con una idea general de a dónde quieres ir y cuándo. Planear con más detalles podría ser inútil y frustrante. Sólo debes ir a la estación un día antes – o aún el mismo día del viaje – y revisa el tablero de horarios. Compra un boleto para la salida que escojas, monta a bordo y disfruta del viaje. Es seguro, las personas son agradables, y el paisaje es hermoso. Mientras tanto, tu auto duerme en casa, bajo un metro y medio de nieve fresca.
