Covadonga, a Historical Sanctuary

After two hours of winding curves through the narrow roads that go through The Picos de Europa, in the region of Asturias, we found ourselves in front of the impressive image of the Covadonga sanctuary. Our faces showed the surprise of seeing such a place in the middle of such wild landscape. The cathedral standing in the middle of the mountains caught our attention. It was surrounded by stone built patios, and the hundreds of tourists that visit this place each day. Down the street, the mouth of the Saint’s Cave (Cueva Santa) waited for us. It is here where the altar to the Virgin of Covadonga is located, decorated with the many offerings that she receives each day. An enormous waterfall goes down from the Cave, forming a lake where once more the tourists and pilgrims gather to drink the saintly waters that merge from this source. One hundred and one steps lead to the mouth of the cave, and thousands make the ascent on their knees as an offer to the Virgin.

Covadonga is nowadays a place of pilgrimage and one of the most visited places in the region. You have not visited Asturias until you have visited Covadonga. It is in this sanctuary where nature, history and religion come together. It was in this very same place where the first Asturian king, Pelayo (whose statue presides the plaza of the Covadonga cathedral), in the year 722, defeated the Moors, giving start to the next 800 years of battle that would lead to the constitution of Spain.

Tras dos horas de curvas por las angostas carreteras que serpentean atravesando Los Picos de Europa, en la región de Asturias, nos encontramos con la impresionante imagen del santuario de Covadonga. Nuestros rostros reflejaban la sorpresa que llevamos al descubrir semejante lugar en el medio de tan agreste paisaje. Una basílica erguida en medio de las montañas llamó nuestra atención, rodeada de patios empedrados y haciendo de testigo de los rostros de los cientos de turistas que visitan el lugar cada día. Al fondo, calle abajo, aparecía la boca de la Cueva Santa, que guarda el altar de la Virgen de Covadonga y las muchas ofrendas que ésta recibe. Una enorme cascada de agua se descolgaba cueva abajo, formando un lago donde una vez más se acumulaban los turistas y peregrinos a beber de las aguas santas que mergen de su fuente. La escalinata de 101 escalones es el camino a la Cueva que personas suben de rodillas como ofrenda a la Virgen.

Covadonga es hoy en día un lugar de peregrinaje y uno de los más turísticos de la región. No se ha visitado Asturias si no se ha visitado Covadonga. En este lugar se mezclan la naturaleza, historia y religión. Fue en este lugar donde en el año 722, el primer rey Astur, Pelayo (cuya estatua preside la plaza de la basílica de Covadonga), derrotó a los árabes, sentando así base a lo que serían los 800 próximos años de batallas que llevarían a la constitución de España.

Covadonga es un lugar que garantiza el asombro de cualquier visitante. Aquí se juntan la esencia de historia y religión del país, así como la impresionante naturaleza que caracteriza a esta región española.
