Short Version

The Houses of the Indianos

Along the region of Asturias one can discover these beautiful small palaces known as houses of the Indianos.
The Indianos were those emigrants from regions of Spain that traveled to America in search of a better life over a
century ago. Although not all of them had their dream come true, a minority were able to return to their homeland
with considerable wealth. To show off their newfound wealth, the Indianos would often build these ostentatious
houses with detailed architecture. They were almost always located in a place of transit, like a main street of
the town, and with luxurious gardens and trees. Presently, in Asturias, one can see these houses used as hotels,
archives, libraries and other public buildings that still ornate and give character to the towns of this region.
