La Tovara

As the boat glides into the mangrove waterways of La Tovara, the visitor feel he has entered a wild place. The only way to see the refuge is by boat, because the mangrove thickets are impenetrable and the ground too muddy. Somehow armadillo, coatimundi and the spider monkey are able to thrive here. La Tovara also hosts many migrant and native bird species, including gray hawks, herons, kingfisher and the bright red vermillion fly catcher. As we reverse course around sunset, our overactive imaginations wonder if overhanging branches might harbor a boa constrictor or a jaguar. But we return safely and soon are on our way back to San Blas, only a few miles away.
