La llama es un camélido sudamericano. Los Incas domesticaron a las llamas. Utilizaron su carne, su lana y las emplearon como bestias de carga. Como animal de carga, una llama con un peso de 115 kilogramos puede cargar aproximadamente 18 kilogramos durante 32 kilómetros al día. Actualmente, los indígenas de Bolivia, Perú, Ecuador, del norte del Chile, y Argentina todavía crían llamas, principalmente por su carne y lana. Las llamas son mansas por naturaleza, pero si son maltratadas pueden reaccionar escupiendo, pateando y negándose a mover. Cultural Note: The Llama

The llama is native to South America, where they were first domesticated by the Incas to be used as beasts of burden. They are related to camels, but they lack the characteristic hump. As a pack animal, the 250 pound llama can carry approximately 40 pounds over 20 miles per day. Today, native people of Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Chile, and Argentina still herd llamas, which are used primarily for their wool. Llamas are gentle by nature, but if they are mistreated they can react by hissing, spitting, kicking and refusing to move. Llamas breed in the late summer and fall, which in the Southern Hemisphere is around November to December. Llamas gestate for 11 months before giving birth to a single "cria."
