Nota cultural: El Chimborazo

Cuando uno piensa en altas montañas cubiertas perpetuamente de nieve y hielo, uno no piensa normalmente en los trópicos. Sin embargo, nos referimos al nevado del Chimborazo, ubicado en el Ecuador, el cual se alza sobre los 6.310 metros sobre el nivel del mar. El Chimborazo fue escalado por primera vez por el andinista británico Edward Whymper en 1880. Antes de la conquista española, el área fue habitada por unas gentes llamadas Puruhá. Desafortunadamente, la identidad cultural de los Puruhá se ha perdido. Los Puruhá eran una sociedad agrícola que cultivaba maíz, fríjoles, calabaza y papas. Ellos creían que el Chimborazo era su antepasado y le ofrecían sacrificios humanos.

Cultural Note: Chimborazo

When one thinks of tall mountains perpetually covered in snow and ice, one does not normally think of the tropics. Yet, such mountains exist very close to the equator. Towering 20,702 feet (6,310 m) above the highlands of central Ecuador, Chimborazo was first climbed by British mountaineer Edward Whymper in 1880. Before the Spanish conquest, the area was populated by a people called the Puruhá. Unfortunately, the cultural identity of the Puruhá has been lost. The Puruhá were an agricultural society who cultivated corn, beans, squash, and potatoes. They believed that Chimborazo was their ancestor, and they offered human sacrifices to the mountain.
