Nota cultural: Las tortugas de caparazón gigante

Las tortugas de caparazón gigante tienen su hogar en las islas Galápagos, conocidas oficialmente como el Archipiélago de Colón. Este grupo de 19 islas está situado 1.000 kilometros al oeste de Ecuador, y es famoso por su extraordinaria vida animal. Fue aquí donde Charles Darwin se inspiró para desarrollar su teoría de la evolución. Tortugas como la de la foto pueden pesar hasta 140 kilogramos. De todas las criaturas existentes en la tierra, se cree que éstas tienen la mayor duración de vida. A pesar de su gran peso y de su paso lento, viajan hasta 45 kilómetros sobre terreno accidentado para poner sus huevos.

Cultural Note: Giant Domed Tortoise

This giant domed tortoise makes its home in the Galapagos Islands, which are officially known as the Columbus Archipelago. This group of 19 islands is located 600 miles (1,000 km) west of Ecuador and is renowned for its unusual animal life. It was here that Charles Darwin was inspired to develop his theory of evolution. Tortoises like the one in the picture can reach a weight of 300 pounds (140 kg). Of all creatures to be found on Earth, these creatures are believed to have the longest life span. Despite their great weight and slow pace, they travel 30 miles over rough terrain to lay their eggs.
