One Traveler's Success Story

Before my first trip to South America I tried to pick up some Spanish by taking classes with a native speaker. She was charming but lacked any system and I ended up just memorizing set phrases about the day or the weather. Next I tried to learn Spanish from a highschool textbook. The pace was incredibly slow and the topics tended to be about age, brothers and sisters and how cute the boys were at the dance. As a recently retired person there was little that would help me on my next trip. Camino del exito allowed me to handle adult topics at a rate I was comfortable with and on our trip to Ecuador it proved invaluable. Instead of having to take guided bus tours, I felt at ease negotiating interesting, cheaper forays by taxi. Having agreed on a price with a taxi driver to get us to the airport on our final day in Quito, we were surprised when his cell phone rang and he pulled to the side of the road halfway to our destination. He spoke no English and told us in Spanish that he was taking us back to the hotel. I protested vigorously that we were leaving shortly for Toronto and had neither the time nor the desire for a detour. He seemed sympathetic and talked some more on the phone. He was sorry, but as we had not paid our bill, he was required to return us to reception. I quickly produced our receipt of full payment and showed it to the driver. He spoke into the phone and then, offering us the hotel's apologies for a case of mistaken identity, he drove us off quickly to our plane. What a huge hassle we avoided! Thanks Camino del exito!
